Who reads this site?

Every day, Cloudflare counts who asked this site for pages: people, search engines, AI crawlers, scripts and scanners. This page sorts those counts into plain answers, filed once a day. The charts need JavaScript; the October answer is in AO-057: mostly machines, and me. Sorting the latest filing…

05 Method

How was this counted?

Every page Cloudflare sent went through four questions, in order. The first yes decides its pile. Whatever is left is probably people, and that includes Aaron reading his own site.

  1. Badge?Does Cloudflare vouch for it as a known bot? Then it is a bot that says who it is: a search engine, an AI crawler, a link preview.
  2. Wrong door?Did the site answer with an error, like 'not found'? That is almost always a scanner trying addresses this site never had.
  3. A program?Does it name a program instead of a browser (curl, Python, a browser run by a script), or give no name at all? Then it is a script or an agent.
  4. Old browser? Is its browser more than a year out of date? People do run old browsers; not this many, this often. Most of these are probably bots in costume.
  5. Everything left: probably people.A recent browser that didn't say it was a bot or a program, and got a real page. Aaron browsing his own site is in here too.
