Fourteen begins as a palette: "FOURTEEN tubes! Most folks buy FORTY and use SIX." It ends Episode 1 as a gallery's number for the painting. After that it keeps arriving as thirteen and one more: thirteen stripped bunks and one that isn't, thirteen mugs and a small cup, POP. 13 revised to 14 because of a girl nobody counted, thirteen opera glasses and a small pair, and the board a ten-year-old resigned. Wherever a fourteen appears, someone uncounted is usually present.
