Alsothe painting; Number fourteen; No. 14; CRIMSON COIL · oil on linen; no14_crimson_coil_postcard.jpg
The oil painting made on air in Episode 1, Jefrie and BloodTailor in the golden ruins of the Storm Bell, hung as "Number fourteen. ... Please don't touch."; later only ever met second-hand: a framed print (E2), a postcard file (E3), a palette and a hallway painting a boy may not touch (E4).
Crimson Coil is the first thing the series made and the thing that lasts. It is painted in twenty minutes of a dawn broadcast and seventy-six days of its own clock, hides a cabin and a ghost blade, is signed twice, gets its last stroke from a brush nobody holds, and is then flown over, X-rayed, cut, sung, filmed silent and hung. After that night nobody in the series stands in front of the original again: it is a print behind Teo's head, a postcard in someone's Pictures, an unsent letter ("I still have the postcard"), a queen painted in its colours, and a painting in a hallway that a nine-year-old is not allowed to touch.
Ages at each episode come from the birth year and the episode's place on the axis, and are only as sure as the weaker of the two (their mark says which). Empty decades are drawn short, at the break marks. Crimson Coil on the whole timeline →
