A chromatic black of alizarin, viridian and bone black, "black with a heartbeat", mixed by the host for Jefrie's tail and sold for free ("you MAKE it") in the pitchman's commercial; it outlives him as Teo's drawing ink, a recipe and a backdrop in Episode 3, and a children's modelling clay in Episode 4.

The host mixes it on air for the tail ("Black with a heartbeat."), and the pitchman gives it a whole black-and-white commercial with a choir, a hotline and fine print too fast to read. It is the only product in Episode 1 that costs nothing, because you make it on your palette, and it is the one that becomes real: sixty years on there is a carton of COIL BLACK drawing ink on Teo's desk, Episode 3's real film uses COIL_BLACK for its darkest backdrop, and in Episode 4 a nine-year-old squishes every clay knight out of a COIL BLACK playdough tub. It is never a dead black.
