Alsorookasaurus; rookasaurus (1004) on Lantern; the student
A reluctant nine-year-old, about 1000 on Lantern, whose imagination dresses every kind of chess piece in its own medium; he plays the Duke and the Count, finds the draw his teacher missed at ten, plays it at the dining table and falls asleep with his finger on the rook.
The boy did not ask for the lesson. He wins on his tablet with the same four-move mate every night and thinks a stalemate he caused "doesn't count". Within a minute he is guessing a Duke's moves from 1858, and his imagination turns the board into crayon, engraving, clay, oil, daguerreotype and blueprint, which the teacher never remarks on. His only arc is small and true: he starts caring about his teacher's clock. After 20:00 the film is his ten minutes: the box where captured pieces go, the old game played for real, sleep with his fingertip still on the rook, and a draw he accepts half asleep. He is nine, the age Rosie was on Episode 1's night. Nobody says it.
Ages at each episode come from the birth year and the episode's place on the axis, and are only as sure as the weaker of the two (their mark says which). Empty decades are drawn short, at the break marks. The boy on the whole timeline →
