A historical person, in calendar years (not on the Y axis). Morphy is the man the whole lesson plays against: White on the title sheet, the one who gives his queen and mates with a rook. The boy, as the Duke and the Count, loses to him move by move and admires him anyway. He is shown only from behind, with his back to the stage he loved, until the music video's last downbeat, when the engraving warms to oil and he turns round.
