Mr. Hale exists only inside a story the host tells, yet he is the reason Episode 1's painting is thick, and his plaque has outlived the story: a relief flight (E1), a bench (E3), a box at the opera (E4). Every later appearance puts his name beside someone who can't see or can't be sure: BloodTailor, the lonely man on the bench, the tactile chess pieces.
