Alsoeight billion people; everyone; "we" (the song and the filmstrip)
After 20:00, all of humanity, given the agent's task by the sky, blindfolds itself, sings a work song, votes ONE MORE TEST every year to at least YEAR 2,006, and keeps working on the watermelon film forever because it loves the work.
Humanity is Aaron's ending made literal: the impossible task people give machines, given to everyone, with the machine's limits (no looking, check it with math, one submission). They do not rebel and they do not stall. They tie on sleep masks and scarves and a welder's mask, read the rules to their children, sing, vote by a hair to test once more, and over centuries make the work into a whole civilisation. The panorama hides the night's people among them: a grandmother cross-stitching a histogram, a boy with a mallet who never swings, jojo's stall, q's card, a lonely man on a bench. When the sky asks how they are doing, eight billion answer at once: not yet. but yes.
