In the Opera Game two of Black's pieces never move at all, and the boy notices: "Everyone else is still in bed." So they sleep, in crayon bunk beds over Black's back rank, through the whole lesson. They fall into the box asleep, though nobody captured them, and wake to the only bell in the film. Bf8 is the engraved one, a bishop built of diagonal hatching, with a sleep mask he pushes up and a mitre that flies onto his head. He zigzags across the foyer on dark squares only and stops dead at a light-squared door; the voice in the boy's head explains, and the rook carries him through. He ends the night in the gods, beside the rook that never got to play.
