In the boy's imagination every king is a daguerreotype, because an early photograph blurs if anything moves and the Opera Game's Black king never moves. He is the only thing in perfect focus in an engraved world. He has three lines, all the same question. In 1858 the teacher answers at once, "No. Black plays c6.", as if a talking photograph were ordinary. In the box world the prompter says "Yes.", he takes one step, and the house rises. On the scramble's first tile, mated, he asks once more, and nobody answers.
