Alsothe Count; Count Isouard de Vauvenargues (chess histories)
The Duke's consulting partner in 1858, always half a beat behind him: a pince-nez glint and a snuffbox, whose timid suggestions are the better moves and who is overruled every time.
A historical person, in calendar years (not on the Y axis). The Count is the second voice of Black: nervous, polite, "Your Highness", and right. He suggests the move the engines like and gets overruled; he starts to say the king should move and is cut off; the teacher quietly takes his side. When he takes snuff, the engraving's margin sneezes. In the box world he is still beside the Duke, gently correcting the record about what His Highness has been saying.

IdeaFor our own reference: he is the better player and has known it for years; he decided long ago that being invited is better than being right. {lore crew 2026-10-22}edit
IdeaFor our own reference: he is the only one in the box who would like to hear the opera, and is too polite to say so. {lore crew 2026-10-22}edit
