Alsoattempt #4 (pizza); Untitled (for Rosie, 9); for Rosie, 9 · 5:09 am; N1; the girl with the tail
The caller's painting for his little sister's ninth birthday, painted along with the dawn broadcast on his fourth try: a grin with about four hundred teeth and a tail, oil on a pizza-box lid, "for Rosie, 9 · 5:09 am"; sixty years on it is still on Rosie's fridge.
Rosie asked her big brother for "the girl with the tail", and at 4:47 in the morning he was on canvas three with the only light on in his building. At 5:09 it is done, a crude grin and a tail on cardboard, and he falls asleep on the line. It is the smallest thing Episode 1 makes and the one that matters most to the series: Rosie keeps it all her life. She mentions it in a stranger's chat at seventy, and in Episode 3 she sends a photo of her fridge with it still there, faded, under magnets, beside a child's crayon of the same girl. Everyone who loves Rosie, it turns out, draws her a tail.
Ages at each episode come from the birth year and the episode's place on the axis, and are only as sure as the weaker of the two (their mark says which). Empty decades are drawn short, at the break marks. The pizza-box painting on the whole timeline →
