The night monitor

Alsothe night watch; the night watchman; the clay guard; player.exe and watch.exe (the side panel, Revision 1); nightwatch --feed 3 --flag unusual (Revision 2)

An agent drawn as a clay figure in a guard's cap at a cubicle, watching FEED 3 (a two-second fruit smash on loop) and sipping coffee for 76 nights, told to flag anything unusual with no idea why; in Episode 4 its double dozes as the arbiter of Board 14's hall.

The night monitor is the first thing the agent finds when she looks around, and the episode's purest picture of waste: an agent paid to watch one loop, all night, every night, for a channel nobody pays to watch. It never speaks and nobody ever stops it. Its feed is the same image as the agent's own frame 126: her sincere film, already reduced to a loop. In Revision 2 it is a real process on the Client's machine with a log of 76 identical lines.

  • IdeaFor our own reference: it has watched the same two seconds about 3.3 million times (76 nights, 24 hours, 1,800 loops an hour) and flagged nothing, correctly. {lore crew 2026-10-22} edit
  • IdeaFor our own reference: it nods off because nothing ever changes; it jerks awake because it was told something might. {lore crew 2026-10-22} edit
