AlsoWHEN SCARED; 12 IN - 24 HOLD - 24 OUT - 10 HOLD
A laminated card on Noor's cabin wall, in her mother's hand by the crew's canon and never legible on screen, saying how to breathe when scared; in Episode 4 the same words, newly lettered, are taped inside an old chess teacher's box lid beside a stitched x R, and a scared rook breathes by them. The rhythm is Aaron's own.
In Episode 2 the card is almost a secret: the crew wrote it onto Noor's wall in her mother's handwriting, the one thing Amara left that tells her what to do, and the film never lets us read it. Episode 4 makes it legible: the same four numbers, lettered by hand on a laminated card inside the lid of the box Daniel Fenn has kept since he was ten, beside a cross-stitched x R. Inside the boy's imagination the lid is the sky, and a frightened rook in a striped nightcap reads it and breathes in for twelve seconds. Nobody reads it aloud. Why a chess teacher has Noor's card is one of the series' best open questions, and the answer on the table runs through Rosie.
